GASLIGHT

Suggested AFTER Viewing Activities
- Using GASLIGHT as a model, have small groups of students write their own thriller
screenplay. Students should review the plot plan of the film and the strategies the
screenwriters and director used to build suspense. Have students include stage
directions, camera angles, special effects, music choices and notes on lighting. When
their pieces are finished, have students videotape a scene from their screenplay to
share with the class.
- Have students compare GASLIGHT with a modern day psychological thriller such as
THE USUAL SUSPECTS and The X-FILES, or with the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock thriller SUSPICION.
- To help students visualize plot, have them choose their favorite scene from the film
and create a pictorial representation. The picture should include the title of the film,
which part of plot the scene is taken from a caption explaining the scene and a
significant quote from the scene. After students have finished, have each of them
present their scene in the correct sequence of the film and post their picture on the
wall in the format of a plot chart. The end result is comparable to a series of "stills"
in film. It also paints a picture of what a story looks like.
