ASPECTS OF FILM

Cinematography
  • Flashback technique: A scene that goes back in time to show events that took place before the present action of the story. Curtiz uses the flashback technique to illustrate Rick and Ilsa's relationship in Paris
  • Dissolve technique: a transition where one image gradually fades while another is replacing it; the two images overlap. This is most often used in film to indicate the passage of time
  • Dialogue: Casablanca is known for its realistic and witty dialogue

Costumes
  • Ilsa and Laszlo almost always wear white
  • The Germans almost always wear black
  • Rick is dressed in both black and white.
  • Renault is almost always dressed in black
